Remington College-Mobile Campus and the Mobile BayBears Partner for 2nd Annual Charlie Ocean Memorial Blood Drive

Donors at July 2 ballpark blood drive get a complimentary ticket to the game

Mobile, Ala. – (June 19, 2012) - Remington College-Mobile Campus and the Mobile BayBears will honor longtime radio personality Charlie Ocean with a blood drive at the BayBears game on Monday, July 2. Ocean passed away in July of 2011 after a brief illness.

Anyone who donates a pint of blood at the 2nd annual Charlie Ocean Memorial Blood Drive will receive a complimentary ticket to that night’s game against the Mississippi Braves. The drive will take place from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

The drive is part of the BayBears “Every Monday Matters” program, sponsored by Remington College-Mobile Campus. The team holds a donation drive for local nonprofits at every Monday home game.

“Charlie was a very well-known radio personality in Mobile for over 30 years and a huge BayBears fan and supporter,” said Mike Callahan, Mobile BayBears Assistant GM/VP. “He often lent his vocal talents to the BayBears on-air broadcast and public address system and was often at the Hank. Charlie was a dear friend and vocal advocate in our community. This blood drive in his honor goes to support our area blood collection. This is our way of giving back to those that helped Charlie in his time of need.”

Important tips for blood donors

About 10% of people attending a blood drive will not be able to donate because their hemoglobin levels are too low – but that can usually be avoided. Donors are encouraged to add some iron-rich foods to their diet a day or so before giving blood. Good sources of iron include meat, dried beans, peas, bread, pasta, dark green leafy vegetables, dried fruits or nuts. Fans who give blood should also be mindful of their alcohol intake at the game.

All the blood collected will be used to help people in the Mobile area.

Remington College-Mobile Campus and the BayBears also teamed up recently for a 3 Lives blood drive. This is Remington College’s national effort to increase the number of minority blood donors.
