Singer AJ Green to Perform and Meet Donors at Remington College-Shreveport Campus Blood Drive on Thursday, September 20

3 Lives campaign highlights the need for minority blood donors

Shreveport, La. – (August 23, 2012) - Remington College-Shreveport Campus welcomes singer AJ Green to campus for its blood drive on Thursday, September 20. Green is the spokesperson for Remington College’s 3 Lives campaign, a national effort to increase the number of minority blood donors.

Green, 19, knows all about the need for minority blood donors. He has sickle cell disease and his treatment includes regular blood transfusions.

Green will share his personal story and his music to inspire others. He is an accomplished R&B singer who has performed for two U.S. presidents and shared the stage with the likes of Elton John, Bill Cosby, Celine Dion and Jennifer Hudson.

Green will hold a short concert for blood donors at 12 pm on the Remington College-Shreveport Campus. The blood drive will run from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm and 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

Remington College has partnered with the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America for a series of blood drives on every Remington College campus. The program is called 3 Lives because three lives may be saved for every one pint of blood donated. The blood drives focus on the need for minority donors – especially African Americans.

“It is extremely important that people donate blood and keep our blood banks stocked,” said Green. “Having had so many transfusions myself, I am grateful that people donate blood.”

Important tips for blood donors

About 10% of people attending a blood drive will not be able to donate because their hemoglobin levels are too low – but that can usually be avoided. Donors are encouraged to add some iron-rich foods to their diet a day or so before giving blood. Good sources of iron include meat, dried beans, peas, bread, pasta, dark green leafy vegetables, dried fruits or nuts.

Blood collected benefits the local community

While the primary goal of the 3 Lives campaign is to recruit minority donors, everyone is encouraged to attend the drive and donate blood. All the blood collected will be used to help people in the Shreveport area.

Remington College-Shreveport Campus is located at 2106 Bert Kouns Industrial Loop.
