National Guard to Recognize Remington College-Shreveport Campus for Supporting Troops

Award ceremony set to thank college for supporting instructor who has been serving in the Middle East

Shreveport, LA – (July 2009) – Remington College–Shreveport Campus will receive an award this month from the National Guard for its support of an employee called to serve a long military tour of duty.

Deborah Kent is an instructor in the Allied Health Department at Remington College – Shreveport Campus and a Corpsman in the Navy Reserve. She has been on active duty serving in the Middle East for more than one year.

The National Guard is recognizing the campus for its support of Ms. Kent while she is on active duty. An award ceremony will take place on Wednesday, July 22nd at 10:45 am at Remington College–Shreveport Campus. Jerry Driskill, Campus President, will receive the award on behalf of the college. Ms. Kent is currently home on leave between tours and will also attend the ceremony.

Co-workers and students have shown their support for Ms. Kent by sending her e-mails, letters and care packages and calling her when possible. Instructors have pitched in to cover some of her classes and additional part-time instructors have been hired to help teach her remaining classes. The campus also proudly displays an American flag sent by Ms. Kent that was flown over Camp Patriot in Kuwait.

“While she’s away, we want Deborah to know that she is loved and missed by everyone on our campus and we’ll all be here for her when she returns,” said Mr. Driskill.

“The e-mails, letters, and care packages I received from my Remington College colleagues and students were a tremendous boost to my morale,” said Ms. Kent. “Just knowing I had people standing behind me and supporting me made my job easier.”

“It’s important for employers to respect the sacrifice that Deborah and others are making for their country,” said Mr. Driskill. “As employers, we need to remember that we have an obligation to help these people transition back into their jobs and their normal lives when they return.”

Ms. Kent says not all reserves get the kind of support she gets from Remington College.

“I have friends who have not been so fortunate and have returned to employment disasters. Being in difficult circumstances for the past several months, yet knowing I have my job to return to, was a huge load off my mind. In today’s economy, knowing you have a job is very important,” she said.

Remington College-Shreveport Campus is located at 2106 Bert Kouns Industrial Loop in Shreveport. The phone number is 318-671-4000.
