Remington College Graduate Makes the Cut, Opens her own Salon in Ft. Worth
Chakina Watkins opens Classy 7 Salon a week after graduating
As a cosmetology student at Remington College-Fort Worth Campus, Chakina Watkins had the goal of one day opening her own salon. Ms. Watkins wasted little time in achieving her goal, graduating with her diploma in September 2009, and opening her own salon just a week later.
Ms. Watkins, who runs Classy 7 Salon in Ft. Worth, is quick to thank her instructors from Remington College’s Cosmetology Program.
“I would have never achieved this goal if it were not for my two favorite instructors,” said Watkins. “Both Ms. Spencer and Ms. Anderson gave me the education needed to succeed in the Beauty Industry.”
Ms. Watkins says her education helped prepare her for the challenges of running her own salon.
“Once I started my own salon, I knew my life would change. I expected to work long hours, to make new friends, and to leave a legacy of success and happiness for my family. The road has been rough at times, but my new career is very rewarding,” she said.
The Remington College Cosmetology Program teaches students the art of hair, skin and nail care through traditional classroom instruction and hands-on training in “The Salon at Remington”, which allows students to work with real clients.
Ms. Watkins also utilized Remington College’s Career Services Department, which is designed to help students find and apply for the jobs of their choice*. Services include help with resume writing, preparing for job interviews and connecting with potential employers. Watkins met with a Job Development Specialist several times and received information on obtaining minority grants for business owners so she could purchase her salon prior to obtaining her license.
“Being a salon owner is challenging, but it is rewarding knowing that you are your own boss,” she says. “Also knowing that the more you give to your business, the more you receive. My ultimate goal has been realized.”
Remington College-Fort Worth Campus is located at 300 East Loop 820 in Fort Worth. The salon is open Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. People can make an appointment by calling 817-880-0090 or just walk in.
