Remington College Holds Nationwide Effort to Recruit Minority Blood Donors

Remington College-Little Rock Campus blood drive set for April 8th

Little Rock, Ark. – (March 11, 2010) – Remington College-Little Rock Campus is holding the first in a series of local blood drives to recruit more minority blood donors to benefit Little Rock residents in need of blood.

The first blood drive will be held on Thursday, April 8th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.as part of National Minority Health Month.

Remington College is joining forces with America’s Blood Centers and the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America for the blood drives. The effort is called 3 Lives – because three lives may be saved for every one pint of blood donated.

The blood drives will focus on the need for minority donors – especially African Americans. According to America’s Blood Centers, the need for African American blood donors is very high.

“African American donors provide blood with unique antigens, which can mean life-saving treatments for people battling sickle cell, leukemia and other diseases,” said Tom Schallert, America’s Blood Centers president. “The best blood match for a chronically ill patient requiring multiple blood transfusions throughout his or her lifetime will likely come from a donor of the same ethnic background.”

African American donors also benefit people battling sickle cell disease.

“Many people with sickle cell disease require frequent blood transfusions, and it’s best for them to receive blood that closely matches their own,” said Elizabeth Simpson, Interim President/COO for the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America. “African American donors provide blood with unique antigens that is vital for people with sickle cell disease.”

While the focus is on recruiting minority donors, everyone is encouraged to attend the drive and donate blood. All the blood collected will be used to help people in the Little Rock area.

Remington College-Little Rock Campus is located at 19 Remington Drive in Little Rock.
